CD-Rom Genealogy Resources

There are number of computer software programs designed to help you compile your family information. Personal Ancestral File (PAF), Family Tree Maker (FTM), and My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) are popular examples. Each program allows you to enter information about family members and print out ancestral charts and even narrative histories compiled from the information entered into the program data files.

The Marion Library has a collection of CD-Rom titles from Family Archives, a collection of genealogical databases offering quick access to historical information:

Originally published by the Genealogical Publishing Company, these books reference the names of approximately 191,000 Union soldiers who were buried in over 300 national cemeteries, garrison cemeteries, soldiers’ lots, and private cemeteries. The Roll of Honor is the only official memorial to the Union dead ever published. Despite its omissions and discrepancies, it remains the comprehensive source of information on Civil War fatalities. To facilitate searching, an alphabetical name index of all 27 volumes is included.

The Social Security Death Benefit Index, 1937 – 1995 (2 CDs): contains over 50 million names of deceased individuals who had social security numbers. The following information is provided: dates of birth and death, social security number and the state where it was issued, Zip Code of last known address and primary location associated with it, and zip code of where death benefit payment was sent. You may write to the Social Security Administration for a copy of the application once you know the number.

World Family Tree, volumes 1 & 2: Contains over 12,000 family trees contributed by FTM software users. Included are first and last names, dates of birth, marriage, death, and other family members and relationships.
